Michigan boys prep hoops: Ten impact freshmen

As the fall months approach, Michigan boys high school basketball quickly approaches, especially with this season’s early start.

Everyone knows what to expect from upperclassmen, and sometimes even sophomores. But freshman impact is relatively unknown.

Sometime around midseason, we will have a 2027 freshman top 100 ranking, but for now, we will highlight 10 freshmen who could have an immediate impact at the varsity level.

Some even already have D1 offers.

Here are our top-10 impact freshmen:

Peyton Kemp, 6-0, Orchard Lake St. Mary – Kemp has been a known commodity and YouTube sensation for years, dazzling with his slick ball-handling and crafty moves. He’s also a great shooter and floor general. Orchard Lake St. Mary is loaded about 12 players deep in future college hoopers, but expect Kemp to carve out a large role right away.

Stevie Hall, 6-1, Cass Tech – Already with a D1 offer from Nebraska, Hall has elite quickness and is mature beyond his years. Cass Tech won a state title led by five-star recruit Darrius Acuff. Acuff is now in Florida, so Hall might immediately step in and start at point guard. He will make sure Cass Tech remains a state title contender for the next four years.

Quintin Graham, 6-5, Warren Fitzgerald – Few freshman boast the punishing physique Graham has. Fitzgerald might be one of the most physical teams in the state this season, and Graham’s post presence will only make them tougher. Graham is a top-5 player in the 2027 class and could make Fitzgerald’s move up to Division 1 a smooth one.

Eden Vinyard, 6-7, Ferndale – Fresh off a D2 state title, Ferndale graduated its entire starting lineup. Vinyard will ease that pain. He’s a physical forward with terrific height and physicality. Ferndale has some nice role players and will have solid overall size. Vinyard’s offensive progression could make this a special team.

Christian Cast, 6-1 & Isiah Marino, 6-7, Detroit Country Day – Remember them? Country Day used to dominate Michigan high school basketball while under legendary head coach Kurt Keener. They have since landed on hard times, but these two freshmen studs could return Country Day back to prominence. Cast, especially, could turn out to be special.

Javier Word, 6-1 & La’Myreion Stansberry, 6-0, Kalamazoo Central – The Maroons had one of the best freshmen in the state last year in 6-7 forward Isaiah Theodile. This year, K-Central will replenish its guards with two explosive backcourt talents. Word and Stansberry could start from Day 1 after the Maroons lost most of last year’s starting lineup.

Kingston Money, 6-2, Warren De La Salle – The Pilots have three elite starting guards, including D1 prospect Phoenix Glassnor. But depth could be an issue for them this year. Money is a physical guard who excels at getting to the basket. He could be the perfect power element to a mostly finesse backcourt.

Prince Ravenna Miles El, 6-0, Brother Rice – A name that won’t soon be forgotten, Miles El has a chance to be an immediate contributor on a team with no true point guard. Brother Rice has been loaded with talent for three years, but haven’t had a true floor general to run the offense, which has hurt them in districts. Miles El could end that trend as early as this season.
