Renaissance star Lance Stone reaches 1,000 points in memorable performance

For those unfamiliar with Detroit Renaissance junior Lance Stone, make an effort to change that.

Stone, a junior 5-7 point guard, dazzles with his impeccable ball-handling, unlimited shooting range and behind-the-back passes.

Renaissance made the cross-state trip to East Kentwood Saturday to play in the GottaGetIt Hoop Classic. The Phoenix start five guards all 6-2 and shorter. They are all also either juniors or sophomores.

Despite the lack of size and experience, Renaissance (9-4) is among the best and certainly most entertaining teams in the state. The Phoenix have scored 70 or more points in 10 games this season, led by Stone’s ability to score and set up teammates.

Stone scored 30 points in a Saturday’s 73-69 win over Kalamazoo Central, eclipsing the 1,000 point mark as just a junior. He hit numerous 3-pointers, glided to the rim and amazed the crowd with spectacular passes.

Although Stone might not have the height of a lot of modern guards, he has the quickness, athletic ability and game I.Q. to thrive at the next level.

Stone already has a number of Division 1 college offers, including Eastern Michigan where his dad has experience coaching. Stone also has offers from Drake, High Point, Detroit Mercy and Toledo.

Despite the connection to EMU, Stone has the skill and potential to thrive in a power-5 conference. With a year and a half of high school eligibility remaining, it would not be a surprise to see Stone racking up Big Ten offers.

Most of Michigan’s top boys high school basketball recruits are wings or post players. Stone stands out as a unique talent as a true point guard who can also drop 30 points.

Outside of Stone’s skill, he’s also the most entertaining player in the state. Sure, East Lansing has several guys who can dunk over almost anyone, but Stone is electric every possession.

The ability to play defense at the D1 level is always a question for undersized guards, but Stone is so quick he’s hard to beat off the line. As he continues to get stronger, defense will likely be a strength just like his offensive prowess.

The GottaGetIt Classic was a terrific event featuring seven high-profile games. Next-level athletes took the floor all day, and Stone still stood out as the most impressive player.
