One of the best showcases on the annual Michigan boys hoops docket got off to a great start Saturday at Grand Rapids Community College.
Five games kicked off the two-weekend event, which will end February 7th at the same location.
Here are some standouts from the first day of games for the 2K26 Showcase day 1:
Kaidon Morning, 6-1, Ann Arbor Huron – Extremely aggressive getting to the basket, Morning scored 26 points, with most of them pouring in after halftime. Morning has tremendous body control around the basket and is fearless about contact. Good free-throw shooter, but not much of an outside shooter at this point. Highly under-recruited. He would likely be a good scorer at the D2 level.
Andrew Walker, 6-3, Detroit Catholic Central – Really like the versatility in his game. He has a nice outside shot, can create off the bounce and has tremendous athleticism, which he uses to throw down some insane dunks. Walker plays with intelligence and is very patient on offense, which allows his teammates to get into rhythm as well. Just a junior, his D1 offers should grow over the next couple years.
Wycell Davis, 6-4, Detroit Catholic Central – Davis has effortless athleticism and a versatile offensive skillset. He’s very long on defense, disrupting passing lanes. He could be a 25-point scorer, but he doesn’t have to be on this stacked team. Another patient player who scores in bunches and looks every bit a D1 college hooper.
Brayden Williams, 6-2, GR Northview – He’s quietly been a great Robin to Cam Ryans’ Batman all season, and almost helped Northview upset Rockford Saturday night. Williams is a lethal outside shooter, who can also run the point and set up the offense. He’s good for about 15 points a game and doesn’t take a ton of shots to get there. A junior D2 schools should keep their eyes on.
Brendan VanderHart, 6-3, Grandville – The only Grandville player who looked up and ready for the early start after a battle Friday night against East Kentwood. He was lively off the dribble and knocked down several 3-pointers, scoring over half of Grandville’s 33 points. A good wing with nice size and outside shooting mechanics.
Jake & Josh Bascom, 6-6 & 6-4, Rockford – The Bascom bros were unstoppable in the second half, leading a rally to defeat Northview. Both players were physical attacking the basket and showed amazing post footwork. Jake, a Central Michigan commit, uses his height and skill to bully defenders, while Josh’s versatility makes him tough to guard one-on-one. These two could spearhead a Breslin run if the chips line up next month.
Miles Burgin, 5-11, GRCC – Um, Michigan has a new superstar, guys, and he comes in a package that doesn’t necessarily scream star athlete. Despite being smaller in size, Burgin threw down two massive dunks, including a two-footed slam from right under the basket. I think it blew a few people away. He also scored 23 points and took home game MVP. Oh, and he’s a freshman.
Tommy Jandernoa, 6-4, GRCC – Jandernoa is growing in confidence with 10 3-pointers in his last two games, including six in Saturday’s blowout win over L’Anse Creuse North. A consistent 3-point shooter was the one thing this team was missing, and now they have two (Burgin above).
